Linton Instrumentation AM548 / AM524 IR Locomotor Activity Monitors

Linton AM548 Standard (Dual Layer)  X, Y, Z IR Activity Monitor.

The AM548 is a powerful, intuitive and economical solution to monitoring the activity of small animals. The AM548 uses an array of infrared beams to determine activity and mobility of a subject. Each AM548 has 48 infrared beams, 24 on each level arranged in an 8 x 16, 1” (25.4mm) pitched grid. The lower grid measures normal X,Y movement, whilst the upper grid measures rearing movement and can be easily raised or lowered to suit the size of the subject being tested.

The AM548 is durable and easily portable.

AMON Control and Data Logging Windows Software

The AMON software runs on Windows PCs, is used to configure the experimental protocol and record activity data via a standard RS232 serial port (no additional interface hardware required). Data can be output in an ASCII text format suitable for use in Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint and other statistical analysis and presentation packages. The AMON software is accessed via a password dialogue box, and the original ‘raw’ data is stored with a checksum (To ensure data integrity, especially relevant to researchers working under G.L.P. conditions). AMLOGGER software can configure, control and record from up to 32 AM548 (or AM524 Single Layer X/Y Activity) Monitors simultaneously.

The AMON software discriminates between different types and speeds of movement. As such, the data that is logged is a detailed breakdown of the various categories of activity. This software also includes facilities to start cages independently of one another and to review files during and after acquisition. Other features include a self-test utility which verifies that all IR beams are functioning correctly.

Categories of activity include:

Activity

Number of valid beam breaks
Rearing

Number of rearing beam breaks
Centre Rear

Number or rearing beam breaks which occurred away from the cage walls.
FR-Count

Front to Rear Movement counts.
Active *(s)

Time Spent Active (Seconds). Beams broken.
Mobile *(s)

Time Spent Mobile (Seconds) More than one beam broken in x or y axis.
Rearing *(s)

Time Spent Rearing (Seconds)

*(s) means a one second block. At the end of each second the AM548 will evaluate any beam breaks that occurred. Each one second block may contain any or all of the above.

Static time can be derived by subtracting the Active time from the Total elapsed time.

Both the AM548 Activity Monitor and the AMON software are designed to be suitable for use in G.L.P. Laboratories. Linton Activity Monitors have been chosen by many of the worlds leading pharmaceutical companies and C.R.O.s. and tests houses world wide.

The Linton AM524 Single Layer X, Y IR Activity Monitor.

The AM524 Single Layer activity monitor has all of the features of the dual layer model but without the rearing measurements.
